Felt brooches

Circles of felt cut with a die

(as I am not neat enough with scissors.)

Embroidered on one piece and then sandwiched around a circle of cardboard for stability

Blanket stitch around the edge of the sandwich and fix on a safety pin to finish.

I also made a sequin tree brooch while trying to clear out some of the surplus I found.

Wardrobe scented or car freshener?

These bracelet size loops will be paired with essential oils and gifted as little gestures this Christmas.

Simply made (can’t remember when or why I got the mini felt balls) by threading a handful on to some ancient stretch magic beading cord.

I will use invisible thread when I run out of stretch magic as the felt balls seem to be unending and I am determined to use up some of my forgotten embellishments.

I use one in my car, hung from the rear view mirror, as I don’t like the smell of commercial scenters but will suggest recipients can keep them on clothes hangers as an alternative to a lavender bag.

Napkin rings for spring tables

These sweet little napkin rings were quick makes from felt scraps.

The strap is about 7cm long and the central round is about 3 cm diameter.

I fixed mine with Velcro dots but they can be stitched closed or have button holes.

Some had simple die cut shapes stitched on with invisible thread. Some had sequins and some more complicated stitching with embroidery thread. to harmonise them as a set, I straight stitched a circle around each design in a contrast colour.

Some had felt circles backing the thread work so they don’t unravel too quickly but they are delicate and definitely won’t survive red wine spills or washing.

Die cutting felt

Time to use some felt scraps. decided to make some badges to brighten winter coats to stuck the layered flowers on felt circles and then stuck on badge pins sandwiched with felt rectangles for stability.

This is a very frugal activity using up old badges and taking miniscule scraps of felt. So while I have supplies out I am going to make embellishments for lavender bags etc. And happily nearly all dies designed for paper seem to work on felt – including the bee and butterfly – although the stamens die does create very flimsy results.

While I used hot glue for these, a more refined approach would be embroidery to fix flowers to the backing. I have used a few French knots here but really enjoy how quickly these come together.

Now to go through my dies to see what other little felt shapes I can cut…

Felt piggy bank

In practical terms, bigger is better – this one wouldn’t hold many coins, but I was pleased at how easy it was to make from some of my Ali Express little felt squares.

I sketched the outline in pencil direct on the felt then cut it out on two matching pieces of cheap, stiff, nylon felt before zig zag stitching around the coin slot and edges. The googly eyes were stuck on with collage medium.

It might be fun to make a suitcase or flag shaped one for someone saving for a holiday; car shaped or Christmas tree shaped or …

Dog collar doodahs

These are simple felt shapes stitched on to a loop of elastic which will slip over the dog’s collar

cheap, stiff felt seems to be best for these, although I am not sure how long the googly eyes or any part will survive tear and wear

I plan Christmas cracker ones for this year’s doggy stockings!

Felt fun Friday

The fun with felt felt day started with me trying to use up scraps from my Santa napkins…

And then I found I had some mixed media tag dies as a bonus in an order from crafters companion… fifty tags as embellishments are now in the wrapping resource box!

Then I found that some of my ordinary dies cut felt as well as paper ( the outline ones anyway)

And a flock of French hens, turtle doves or partridges are now being cut, glued and stitched as tree decoration gifts…
